Challenging EIA for a new fixed link across Roskilde Fjord, Denmark
In the city of Frederikssund, Denmark an existing bridge that was built before the Second World War is causing severe traffic congestion. The Danish Road Directorate has contracted DHI to develop and evaluate new alternative alignments for a new fixed link.

The Fjord of Roskilde is designated an important refugee for migrating and resident water fowls and thus a protected area under the EU Habitats Directive and Birds Directive.

A decision process was established by Road Directorate where all the aspects of the EIA were evaluated in order to select a limited number of options to be assessed in more details.

To minimize the impact of the marine structures of the fixed links, the layout was evaluated and developed in close collaboration with the technical consultant in order to achieve a design with least hydrodynamic resistance and if required achieve a so-called Zero Solution. The water quality aspects were evaluated in collaboration with the environmental consultant.
