Narragansett Bay Commission uses sewer modelling to evaluate CSO mitigation alternatives
In order to comply with the Federal Clean Water Act, Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) entered into a consent agreement with the Rhode Island Department of Environment Management (RIDEM) to minimize combined sewer overflows. As part of the Long Term Management Plan, NBC initiated a combined sewer overflow abatement plan focusing on construction of stormwater storage tunnels and evaluating alternatives for integrating the tunnels with the existing collection systems.
NBC required a robust and reliable model capable of accurately representing the complex hydraulics in the existing collection system, as well as evaluating connections with the proposed storage tunnels. After a comprehensive evaluation of available modelling systems, NBC selected MIKE URBAN as the most appropriate software meeting their needs for a reliable, high-performance hydraulic model. In addition, NBC highlighted the following benefits:
- Easy integration with existing systems
- Ability to integrate ArcGIS infrastructure data into the model building
- DHI’s substantial experience with sewer modelling technology and innovation
- Certainty of continued development and technical support
