Groundwater

Many countries and regions rely partly or solely on groundwater supply. Water supply based on clean groundwater is both economically and environmentally desirable. Understanding groundwater system and how the groundwater resource respond to pumping, recharge and interaction with surface water systems such as river, lakes and wetlands is essential for a proper management.

Groundwater modelling can take many forms in terms of spatial scale, ranging from single well field management to countrywide assessment of the groundwater resources, and problems investigated, e.g. groundwater development and protection, subsurface constructions of tunnels, deposits and buildings.

MIKE SHE and FEFLOW constitutes two of the most comprehensive and versatile state-of-the-art software packages for investigating groundwater problems. FEFLOW is the preferred choice for many types of complex aquifer studies involving flow, mass, heat transport and density driven flow. The strength of MIKE SHE lies in its unique physically-based catchment approach, making it an excellent tool for integrated surface water - groundwater investigations.
