FEFLOW 6 AnnouncementThis week, at the 2nd International FEFLOW User Conference in Potsdam/Berlin, the new version of FEFLOW will be launched. This at the same time marks the 30th anniversary of FEFLOW software. Since its first release in 1979 as a purely scientific program, FEFLOW has undergone significant development over the years, making it today's premium simulation software for subsurface and porous media modelling. Some of the new features are: (Click to enlarge)
- A completely redesigned user interface
- Fast and powerful 2D and 3D graphics
- Efficient access to all features due to flat interface design
Coming newsletters will describe the new features in more detail. For further information please contact Peter Schätzl | |

The 2009 release of MIKE URBAN includes a long list of new features and improvements of existing features in the WD (Water Distribution) module. Some of these have been described in previous newsletters. Below are a few more:
MIKE URBAN: Check for pipes where the flow direction has changed It is possible to detect pipes where the flow direction has changed during the hydraulic simulation. The same tool can also be used for detecting links and nodes, where the results (pressures, for example) changed more than a specified limit. Example 1 In order to select (display) pipes, where the flow direction has changed during the simulation period, load the simulation results and select Tools | Select nodes and pipes where.... Illustration: Select nodes or pipes where…
Select "Link: Flow" result item from the results data type and select "Value sign (+/-) has changed" from the detection type. Define the threshold value, which is used to detect the change. Click "Select" when ready. Illustration: Pipes where the flow direction has changed are selected from the Map
Example 2 In order to select (display) nodes, where the node pressure has changed during the simulation period more than 15metres, load the simulation results and select Tools | Select nodes and pipes where... Illustration: Select nodes or pipes where…
Select "Node: Pressure" result item from the results data type and select "Difference between minimum and maximum value" from the detection type. Define the limit value, which is used to detect the change. Click "Select" when ready. Illustration: Nodes where the node pressure has changed more than 15 metres are selected from the Map

"MIKE SHE was used to simulate the impact of forecast land-use changes in the Kulin catchment on surface and groundwater conditions. In this low rainfall, data limited catchment of 50,000 ha, the model proved to be a very robust tool. It accurately modelled observed groundwater trends and the spatial extent of shallow water tables. Simulations were used to test a range of scenarios and community consultation undertaken using output from the model The model, constructed by DHI, proved to be an important communication tool to both educate and change behaviour. We look forward to developments to improve the models capacity to enable better integration of plants and their interaction with shallow water tables and runoff. In experienced hands, MIKE-SHE is a powerful hydrological model with potential for wider application in catchment management." Dr Richard George, Principal Research Scientist, Department of Agriculture and Food and CRC FFI Project Manager. "The wastewater collection system we modeled includes a number of complex hydraulic conditions, with steeply sloped gravity mains, inverted siphons, intermittent force mains and many variable and constant speed pump stations. The modeling software we initially started with was simply not capable of handling these conditions and we were unable to produce reasonable results. Having used MOUSE in the past, I was confident that MIKE URBAN would be able to handle the complex hydraulic conditions in this model. Once we made the switch to MIKE URBAN (using the MOUSE numeric engine) we were able to get our model data set imported and producing reasonable results in just a couple of days. The DHI staff we dealt with were very helpful and knowledgeable, and their real-world project modeling experience provided valuable insights on improving my model setup and trouble-shooting some of the problems I ran into. We managed to successfully complete the analysis and produce a reliable and useful model for our client. I look forward to my next opportunity to apply MIKE URBAN" Dave Harms, BHC Consultants Seattle, WA. |

The U.S. Soil Conservation Service (SCS) Curve Number method is widely used for an approximate estimation direct runoff from rainfall events in catchments (see e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runoff_curve_number). The Curve number (CN) describes the catchment characteristics in terms of soil type, land use, relief and antecedent soil moisture conditions. Based on CN, the soil retention (infiltration loss) and the direct runoff can be calculated. When you need to analyze flooding caused by a rainfall event in areas where a certain initial infiltration loss is expected, the SCS CN method is easy and efficient to apply with MIKE FLOOD. You will need to create 2D maps (dfs2 files) of the CN and the rainfall event (time varying), and calculate the time varying Direct Runoff for each cell. The result in the form of a new dfs2 file is then used in MIKE FLOOD as a source boundary file. The procedures for creating and manipulating time varying dfs2 files are simple to apply, using a selection of tools available within the Toolboxes that comes with a MIKE FLOOD installation. The steps are explained in detail in the Tips and Tricks Section on the MIKE by DHI website, see: http://tips.dhigroup.com/default.asp?module=MIKE+FLOOD&ID=248#text Figure: Spatial distribution of Curve Number

An improved (alternative) solution is available when using a limiting section in MIKE11 Dambreak module. The user must activate the alternative/revised method through the MIKE11.ini file. Open the MIKE11.ini file from the \bin directory and look for the section: ;HD-Variables no 50 ALTERNATIVELIMITINGSECTION =OFF Changing the value of this parameter to "ALTERNATIVELIMITINGSECTION =ON" will activate the new method. A related feature is a new diagnostic to assist with visualisation of the limiting section. The user can place an empty text file in the same directory as the simulation (sim11) file with the name "DBFinalCrosssection.txt". This file will be populated with raw data of the final dambreach-profile, which can be imported into a cross section file. The alternative limiting section solution will become the default method in the next Service Pack (October), with the ability to switch back to the current method in the INI file if required. Please note: the alternative solution for limiting section can result in adverse results in some applications. |

SIGSA-ESRI National User Conference, Mexico City, 2-4 September 2009. In connection with the annual GIS user conference in Mexico a workshop on water modelling and mapping took place in which local MIKE by DHI users gave examples of their model applications. From Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) Carla Alejandra Rivera Ramirez presented a case from Rio Mezcalpa, where MIKE 21C is used to design and optimize river bank protections and her colleague Alejandro Lara Hernández showed a case from Laguna de Cuyutlán. Alejandro is using MIKE 21 HD & ECO Lab to study possible effects of a considered channel deepening on the water quality in the lagoon. Bernardo Echavarria Soto, EFE Asesores, shared his 10 years experiences in using MOUSE for modelling of the drainage system in Mexico City. Daniel Ortega Covarrubias, SIGSA, have used MIKE Flood to analyse the flooding risk in Tlaltenango Zac. Read more about this including the MIKE URBAN training course held prior to the conference, here. |
