FEFLOW 6 - A New Working Environment ^

Following the announcement of the coming new generation of FEFLOW at the 2nd International FEFLOW User Conference in Potsdam/Berlin in September, this and coming, newsletters will focus on some the developments made. Developments that will ensure that FEFLOW 6 is prepared to cope with the future challenges in subsurface and porous media modelling

Figure: A combination of data plots on a partially carved-out model domain (salt diapir in a sedimentary basin, 5x vertical exaggeration)

One, perhaps the essential, motivation for the development of FEFLOW has been to facilitate efficient iterations of the modeling cycle from model set-up to simulation to visual and quantitative output of the results. Along the way, a persisting tenet has been to "keep the simulation honest" between input and output: Given a particular discretization, an oscillating solution may just be a mathematical consequence and will in such a case indeed be shown, foregoing any hidden internal fudging of user-specified input or intermediate results aimed at "nice-looking" results. While well-defined smoothing methods are available in FEFLOW, they are subject to user control and never invoked by default. This still applies fully to the most recent release, FEFLOW 6. Utilizing current GUI toolkit and graphics technology, FEFLOW 6 does however represent a break with the FEFLOW appearance that has become familiar to many users over the years. The likely most striking contrast in the user interface reflects the change away from a strictly hierarchical menu structure implying a serial workflow with a comparatively fixed sequence of operations. Instead, the new design keeps all functionality accessible whenever possible to ensure maximum flexibility and efficiency for the user.

Facelift - MIKE URBAN Water Distribution ^

The 2009 release of MIKE URBAN includes a long list of new features and improvements of existing features in the WD (Water Distribution) module. Some of these have been described in previous newsletters. Below are a few more:

MIKE URBAN: Store complete results (all time steps) in the database

It is possible to store the complete model results (for all time steps) and for the selected part of the network into the database. This is essential when using Microsoft Access or Excel tools for analyzing the model results and for using user-defined tools for the additional results processing.

In order to store the model results to the database, load the simulation results into MIKE URBAN and select nodes and links you want to use for storing the simulation results to the database. You can also store all nodes and links in case you do not use the selection set.

Illustration: Select nodes and links you want to use for storing the simulation results to the database

Next, select Model Results | Results Table to open the results table. You can also re-define the selection set from within the Results Table. Click "Database" when ready and the active tab results (such as Junction, for example) will be stored to the database. See the table below to see what database tables are used for the results.

GEO type Database table
Junctions mw_RES_junction
Tanks mw_RES_tank
Pipes mw_RES_pipe
Pumps mw_RES_pump
Valves mw_RES_valve
Table: Database tables used to store the simulation results

Illustration: Click "Database" from within the Results Table to store the results to the database

Once the results are stored in the database, you can open and work with them within Microsoft Access or other database management tools.

Illustration: Results are stored in the database file (Microsoft Access)

Note that the simulation results are stored for every time step (TSTEP field) and that summary field including minimum, maximum, and average values are stored for each result item.

Press Releases ^
Ontario Ministry of Environment Great Lakes Unit Selects MIKE 3 for Hydrodynamics and Water Quality Modelling of Great Lakes ^

The Great Lakes Unit (GLU) of the Ministry of Environment assists the Ontario government in meeting its commitment to the Canada Ontario Agreement Respecting the Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem by monitoring near shore regions and Areas of Concern within the Great Lakes. The programs of the GLU provide assistance in the evaluation of progress towards restoration of environmental conditions, and valuable information for Lake-wide Management Plans. One component of this program involves the use of numerical models to describe the movement of surface water and associated sediments and contaminants, within the Great Lakes' water system, including chemical interactions within the water itself, between the water and sediment, and between the water and the atmosphere.

The Ontario Ministry of Environment selected DHI's MIKE 3 software package as the most appropriate tool for meeting their objectives and technical water modeling requirements including:

  • Simulation processes: 3D hydrodynamics, water quality, sediment transport, wave dynamics, and spill modeling
  • Numerical approaches: finite difference (uniform rectangular grids) and finite volume (flexible mesh with triangular and quadrangular elements)
  • Graphical User Interface: Windows based platform, no third party software, visualization, data input and result visualization, GIS integration
  • Software Support: Local technical support staffed by professional engineers and modelers
  • Software Maintenance: Annual upgrades and regular service packs available via download

Peter Nettleton, Senior Project Scientist for the Ministry of Environment is currently using MIKE 3 to develop a Lake Erie model which will be used, in conjunction with our large monitoring data set, to provide an improved understanding of the effects of small to medium size watershed tributaries on water quality in the near shore of Lake Erie's central basin. The model will help the Ministry better understand the interaction between near shore and offshore hydrodynamics and water quality, with emphasis on the flux of nutrients and particulate material originating from the watersheds. The knowledge gained from the study will ultimately permit better management of the near shore zone water resources, which are of special concern to the public since they are extensively used for both recreation and drinking water supply.

For more information on this project, please contact: Peter Nettleton Senior Project Scientist Ministry of Environment peter.nettleton@ontario.ca

For more information about the MIKE by DHI suite of 2D and 3D coastal and marine modeling software products, please contact: Patrick Delaney, Vice President, Software (North America), DHI Water & Environment, pad@dhigroup.com

Obituary for Torben Sørensen ^

Torben Sørensen, the founder and Director of the Danish Hydraulic Institute DHI from 1964 to 1996 passed away on 26. August 2009. Those of you who have known DHI and `TS´ will also know that computational hydraulics was the answer to his vision for the future of hydraulics, and that it was `TS´ who created the stimulating environment at DHI for this development.

What the users says ^
^

With strong capability in Pre and post processing, the MIKE by DHI software tool is very convenient, especially for the result extraction, which impress me greatly. At present, the MIKE 21 system has gained great success in Qingchaosha reservoir project, east Tai lake regulation project, etc. It's great and the most sophisticated in the world.

Ji Hongyan, Senior hydraulic engineer from Shanghai Investigation, Design & Research institute

We would not miss this opportunity to thank you and the DHI team for the tremendous support and opportunity they gave us, allowing us to discover new areas. We hope to continue specializing in the field and in the various options that MIKE gives us.

Melody Avalos Arratia and Héctor Cifuentes León, Universidad de Valparaíso, Chile in communication with local DHI Software agent. MIKE 3 and ECO lab were used in their thesis work on 'Behavioral assessment of a theoretical integrated crop to catch nutrients from salmon aquaculture industry through ecological simulations'.
